Vijayawada: Durga flyover may take 6 months to complete
The R&B officials submitted a report to the new Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy about the extension of deadline for completion of the flyover and the contractor, Soma Company, had made the appeal seeking extension.
The public in the city are waiting to hear to the decision of Chief Minister Mr Jagan. The agreement with the contractor was finalised for RS.272 crore. Later, with the change of design and to construct retaining wall near Krishna Lanka and also the underpass way, the contract amount has been increased by Rs.13 crore. With this, the total contract amount reached RS.285 crore.
The central government rejected the proposals of the state government to construct the viaduct design and the state government came forward to spend the excess amount Rs.11 crore towards that pushing the cost further to Rs.296 crore. Nearly 76 per cent of the cost has been paid to the contractor and the contractor is asking for Rs.6 crore from the state government as there is no balance in the central government payment.
The Y-pillar works which are the important part of the flyover works are going on at a snail’s pace. For the last six months, there has been no progress in the works with the officials and politicians being completely busy with election activity.
So far, only 2 Y- pillar works have been completed of the total 6 Y-pillars and the span works were started on the completed Y-pillars. The works have been delayed mainly due to shortage of manpower. In the wake of the severe heat wave, labourers have not been turning up to work on the project. As of now, 85 per cent of the flyover works were completed and the remaining are in progress.
- It was delayed due to change of design and addition of structures
The 15 per cent remaining works include those of the four Y-pillars and spans on that 4 pillars, approach linkage viaduct on the canal portions. The approach road works on the Bhavani Puram side are in progress while that towards the municipal corporation are moving at snail’s pace.
Meanwhile, the traffic has been increasing in the capital city every day and the motorists have been facing a tough time commuting on the roads. They have been complaining of longer time for travelling due to the delayed flyover works, apart from the dust raising due to the works. Both the Kanaka Durga flyover and the Benz Circle flyover works should be com-pleted at the earliest to reduce the traffic problem in the city.
Chief Minister Y.S.Jagan Mohan Reddy may discuss Kanaka Durga flyover works with the officials of departments concerned when he conducts a review meeting with the R&B and state highway officials.
