This note considers the Tindle Newspapers group.
Farnham-based Tindle publishes over 225 daily and weekly
titles in the UK, most with tiny circulations and many
more than 100 years old. Overall circulation in 2003 was
585,997.
It also owns 14 UK radio stations.
The group was founded by Sir Ray Tindle (1927- ) in 1950,
reportedly using his £300 demobilisation pay from
1947. He has attracted attention for editorial invention,
notably his 2003 direction to editors at the beginning
of the second Iraq War
When
British troops come under fire, however, as now seems
probable, I ask you to ensure that nothing appears in
the columns of your newspapers which attacks the decision
to conduct the war.
In
July 2007 Tindle acquired 27 weeklies and nine niche titles
from Trinity Mirror: South London Press (eight titles,
including the Streatham Post and Greenwich Mercury, with
a combined circulation of 240,900), North London &
Herts Newspapers (eight titles, including the Tottenham
Advertiser and Potters Bar Press, with a combined circulation
of 238,582), Yellow Advertiser (11 titles, including the
Barking & Dagenham and Ilford & Redbridge Yellow
Advertisers, with a combined distribution of 465,230),
Your Local Directory, Great Days Out, Christmas in South
London and Career Track.
