Las Vegas-based Stephens Media Group publishes the
Las Vegas Review-Journal and some 30 other newspapers
in eight US states, two news bureaus and internet portals
such as LasVegas.com and CasinoGaming.com. Prior to 2002
it was known as Donrey Media Group.
history
Donrey was founded by Donald Reynolds (1905-1993)
in 1940.
At its peak in the 1980s it encompassed 52 daily newspapers
and five cable companies, television and radio stations
and outdoor advertising operations.
It was acquired by Arkansas-based investment firm Stephens
Group on Reynolds' death, being rebadged as Stephens Media
Group in 2002.
In 1998 Donrey sold 28 newspapers to Community Newspaper
Holdings Inc (CNHI). They included
the Washington Times-Herald in Indiana; Clinton Herald
and Oskaloosa Herald in Iowa; Glasgow Daily Times in Kentucky;
Picayune Item, The Poplarville Democrat in Mississippi;
Moberly Monitor-Index in Missouri; Alamogordo Daily News
in New Mexico; and Altus Times, Blackwell Journal-Tribune,
Chickasha Daily Express, Claremore Daily Progress, Durant
Daily Democrat, Frederick Leader, Guymon Daily Herald,
Henryetta Daily Free-Lance, Norman Transcript, Okmulgee
Daily Times, Pauls Valley Daily Democrat in Oklahoma
In 2006, as part of the takeover of Knight
Ridder, McClatchy announced
that would sell The San Jose Mercury News and
The Contra Costa Times to a partnership of MediaNews
(54%), Gannett (19%) and Stephens
Group (26%)
