It covers -
introduction
Radio
One Inc. owns or operates 54 US radio stations and
is the largest African American media company targeting
black listeners. It is controlled by chief executive Alfred
Liggins III and his mother Catherine Hughes, founder of
the company (with an aggregate 83% of shares).
The group was established in 1980 by Hughes, a radio executive
who took advantage of Federal Communications Commission
(FCC) regulations aimed at facilitating ownership of US
broadcast stations by minorities. Radio One grew slowly
during the 1980s, emphasising acquisition and turnaround
of ailing radio stations targeted at black metropolitan
audiences. It gained national prominence with acquisition
of 12 large stations from Clear Channel
for US$1.3 billion in 2000. The deal formed part of FCC
regulatory approval for Clear's US$23 billion acquisition
of AMFM Inc.
As of early 2008 Radio One owns and/or operates radio
stations in 17 urban markets in the United States. It
also owns Magazine One, Inc. (Giant Magazine),
a channel on XM Satellite Radio, interests in TV One LLC
(a cable/satellite network programming primarily to African-Americans)
and Reach Media, Inc - owner of the Tom Joyner Morning
Show and syndicator of programs by figures such as the
controversial Al Sharpton.
It created TV One with Comcast
(the largest US the largest cable tv operator) in late
2004. TV One primarily targets African American urban
viewers. It is owned by Radio One, Comcast, Bear Stearns'
Constellation Ventures, Syndicated Communications, Pacesetter
Capital Group and Opportunity Capital Partners.
Along with many other urban-format radio stations Radio
One has seen its market share erode with the rise of Hispanic
radio. In 2007 it sold, or agreed to sell, 12 radio stations
in four markets, around 20% of its portfolio.
