the name
The ketupa family of owls - fish owls - appear to have
originated in Manchuria and are now found in an arc from
the Himalayas across the Kurile Islands to western North
America and south to Malaysia.
Because of their remoteness and rarity they are one of
the least-known groups of owls. The largest subspecies,
Blakiston's Fish Owl (Ketupa blakistoni), can reach
a wing-span of almost two metres. The Ainu of Japan regard
them as gods. In Siberia they are used to stuff pillows.
Malaysian villagers fret that they drink human blood.
While they prefer fish, particularly the larger fresh-water
species such as salmon, they've been observed to catch
hares, monkeys, domestic poultry and dogs.
logo
The owl image on each page of this site is taken from
an Athenian coin in circulation at the time of Plato.
It depicts the Little Night Owl (Athene Noctua),
a distant relative of the much larger fish owl family.
The Athene owl was a symbol of Athens and the goddess
Athena. It symbolises wisdom and prosperity.
