This profile regarding the Indianapolis-based Emmis group is under development.

As of early 2005 Emmis owned and operated over 20 radio stations in major US markets - including New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles - along with two radio networks (AgriAmerica and Network Indiana) in Indiana. It has a station in Hungary, the nine-station be one radio network in the Flanders region of Belgium and a network in Slovakia. It formerly had stakes in two stations in Argentina.

Emmis at that time owned 16 television stations in 12 US states. In August 2005 it announced definitive agreements to sell nine of its stations in three separate transactions. The stations represented 53% of Emmis' tv station operating income in the fiscal year ending February 2005.

It publishes several regional magazines such as Los Angeles Magazine, Atlanta, Indianapolis Monthly and Texas Monthly. The group includes media consulting units.

The group is controlled by founder Jeffrey Smulyan. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA. in History and Telecommunications, before gaining a Juris Doctor degree from USC School of Law and operating radio stations WNTS in Indianapolis and KRCO in Omaha. He established Emmis in 1980.
